Please read breakdown carefully – we are looking for specifics not just general submissions.

Please apply with a CV and headshot or your Spotlight CV link along with a covering email detailing why you are applying with focus on our specific questions to Sarah and Rachel hello@artwithheart.org.uk

We are casting for 3 roles; Boy, Girl and Mum.

THE COMPANY:

Art with Heart are an award-winning company proudly based in Salford, creating performance, participation and education projects that support personal and collective growth to instigate social change.

Associate Artists at The Lowry, Art with Heart are casting for their exciting new theatre project Stan. Developed with The Lowry and Deaf charity Genie Networks, Stan is a play for children which explores communication, friendship, identity, the family unit… and dinosaurs.

The development of Stan has been supported by funders and partners including The Lowry, Backstage Trust, Action Transport Theatre and Genie Networks. Please visit artwithheart.org.uk for more information about the company.

THE PROJECT:

Stan – named after the T-Rex at the Manchester Museum, tells the story of a blossoming friendship between a deaf girl and hearing boy who is struggling to cope with the departure of his father. As the pair bond over their shared love of dinosaurs and learn to communicate, the girl teaches him how to play imaginatively without reserve, and helps him deal with the change in his familial structure.

A bilingual production performed in English and British Sign Language (BSL), Stan positively demonstrates how we can overcome language barriers and challenges preconceptions of deafness, presenting a strong deaf character in a lead role. It looks at personal ability, growth and the power of play, giving children space to explore their feelings during parental separation and change.

We are looking to cast actors for the R&D phase who will be part of a national tour of Stan to theatres in Autumn 2019. We are interested in passionate, team players with an interest in learning new performance and facilitation skills, as well as British Sign Language. We are looking for creative collaborators with an interest in new writing and new ways of working in theatre.

The R&D will culminate in an industry sharing at The Lowry and tester sharings in community settings. The company will attend a D/deaf awareness day and learn basic British Sign Language to support communication with our deaf actor and deaf audience members. Rehearsals and performances will be supported by a qualified BSL interpreter.

The company will be responsible for get in and get outs. We’re looking for easy going, dedicated, and passionate people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.

MUST have a base in Manchester (unless being submitted for deaf girl role). (Accommodation on tour in 2019 will only be provided outside Greater Manchester).

THE ROLES:

Boy (Male, 18 – 22)

MUST BE GREATER MANCHESTER BASED (no relocation fees included) – PLEASE STATE WHERE YOU ARE BAED.

Character aged 6-7. We need an ADULT (18+) actor who is young looking, but we are not looking for an actor to ‘play at’ being 6. We want someone who looks young but has a good head on their shoulders, is a strong actor with emotional intelligence who will play the reality of the situation, not at being childlike.

Sensitive, reserved, a bit insular. Aware of those around him, but doesn’t want to stand out and is definitely not part of the cool crowd! The story centres around him dealing with the departure of his father and the impact that has on his identity. Loves dinosaurs!

We are open to all applicants but would love a working class, PoC/BAME for this role if possible.
Would be really interested in casting a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adult) in this role who has BSL skills (please state whether CODA or has BSL Level in application).

PLEASE HIGHLIGHT WITH SUBMISSION:
1. WHERE YOU ARE BASED
2. IF YOU CAN ALREADY SIGN (BSL)
3. IF YOU ARE DBS CHECKED
4. YOUR EXPERIENCE (if any) OF WORKING WITH YOUNG, DIVERSE AUDIENCES AND FACILITATION SKILLS.

Please direct any enquiries to: hello@artwithheart.org.uk

Mum (Female, 25 – 38)

MUST BE GREATER MANCHESTER BASED (no relocation fees included) – PLEASE STATE WHERE YOU LIVE.

Must believably have a son aged 6-7. Preferably looking for an actor aged 25-35.

The play opens with her getting ready for work whilst telling her son that his father is moving out of the family home that day. She struggles to handle her partner leaving and being left as a working single parent. The actor needs to be able to play the complexities of the situation with integrity. Please note if the actor has personal experience of parental separation.

We are open to all applicants but would love a working class, PoC/BAME for this role if possible.

Would be really interested in casting a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adult) in this role who has BSL skills (please state whether CODA or has BSL Level in notes).

PLEASE HIGHLIGHT WITH SUBMISSION:
1. WHERE YOU ARE BASED
2. IF YOU CAN ALREADY SIGN (BSL)
3. IF YOU ARE DBS CHECKED
4. YOUR EXPERIENCE (if any) OF WORKING WITH YOUNG, DIVERSE AUDIENCES AND FACILITATION SKILLS.

Girl (Female, 18 – 22)

FOR THIS ROLE WE ARE ONLY CASTING ACTORS WHO IDENTIFY AS DEAF/HEARING IMPAIRED/HOH WITH NATIVE BSL.

Deaf and proud. Confident, emotive, strong minded, kick-ass young girl with a bright imagination and kind heart. Dinosaur lover! If she were on Secret Life Of 5 Year Olds, she’d be everyone’s favourite new feminist icon (like Eva- https://youtu.be/OMvYkLi5YWc).

BSL is her native language and she has deaf parents – sent to a mainstream school she meets the Boy on the school playground. He has just learnt that his parents are separating and she helps guide him through the frustration of his new situation.

Experience in physical theatre would be preferable, but not essential – we would rather find the right person!
