We’re casting for our tour of Stan!

Please read breakdown carefully – we are looking for specifics not just general submissions.

Please apply with a CV and headshot or your Spotlight CV link along with a covering email detailing why you are applying with focus on our specific questions to Sarah at hello@artwithheart.org.uk

We are casting for 3 roles; Boy, Girl and Mum.

Company Summary:

Award winning Art with Heart create performance, participation and education projects that support personal and collective growth to instigate social change.

Associate Artists at The Lowry, Art with Heart are casting for their next theatre project Stan. Stan is a play for children which explores communication, friendship, identity, the family unit… and dinosaurs.

We are looking for a cast for a week of R&D in October 2019 and then a tour in Spring/Summer 2020. We are interested in passionate, team playing creative collaborators with an interest in new writing and British Sign Language.

The company will be responsible for get in and get outs. We’re looking for easy going, dedicated, and passionate people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in.

MUST have a base in Manchester (unless being submitted for the deaf role). (Accommodation on tour in 2019 will only be provided outside Greater Manchester).

Please visit artwithheart.org.uk for more information about the company.

Project Summary:

Stan – named after the T-Rex at the Manchester Museum, tells the story of a blossoming friendship between a deaf girl and hearing boy who is struggling to cope with the departure of his father. As the pair bond over their shared love of dinosaurs and learn to communicate, the girl teaches him how to play imaginatively without reserve, and helps him deal with the change in his familial structure.

A bilingual production performed in English and British Sign Language (BSL), Stan positively demonstrates how we can overcome language barriers and challenges preconceptions of deafness, presenting a strong deaf character in a lead role. It looks at personal ability, growth and the power of play, giving children space to explore their feelings during parental separation and change.

Roles:

Girl (Female)

WE ARE ONLY CASTING ACTORS WHO IDENTIFY AS DEAF/HOH WITH BSL.

Character aged 7. We need an ADULT (18+) actor who is young looking, but we are not looking for an actor to ‘play at’ being 7. We want someone who looks young but has a good head on their shoulders, is a strong actor with emotional intelligence who will play the reality of the situation, not at being childlike.

Deaf and proud. Confident, emotive, strong minded, kick-ass young girl with a bright imagination and kind heart. Dinosaur lover! If she were on Secret Life Of 5 Year Olds, she’d be everyone’s favourite new feminist icon (like Eva- https://youtu.be/OMvYkLi5YWc).

BSL is her native language and she has deaf parents – sent to a mainstream school she meets the Boy on the school playground. He has just learnt that his parents are separating and she helps guide him through the frustration of his new situation.

Experience in physical theatre would be preferable, but not essential – we would rather find the right person!

Rehearsals will be supported by a qualified BSL interpreter.

We are open to deaf actors who live outside Manchester but PLEASE STATE WHERE ACTOR IS BASED. THEY NEED TO BE HAPPY WITH BEING BASED IN GREATER MANCHESTER FOR DURATION OF THE JOB.

PLEASE HIGHLIGHT:

1. WHERE YOU ARE BASED

2. IF YOU CAN ALREADY SIGN (BSL)

3. IF YOU ARE DBS CHECKED

Please direct any enquiries to: hello@artwithheart.org.uk

Sensitive, reserved, a bit insular. Aware of those around him, but doesn’t want to stand out and is definitely not part of the cool crowd! The story centres around him dealing with the departure of his father and the impact that has on his identity. Loves dinosaurs!

Would be really interested in casting a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adult) in this role who has BSL skills (please state in notes) but not essential.

We would love to see lots of suggestions including working class actors and actors of colour.

Mum (Female)

MUST BE GREATER MANCHESTER BASED – PLEASE STATE WHERE YOU LIVE.

Must believably have a son aged 6-7. Preferably looking for an actor aged 30-45.

The play opens with her getting ready for work whilst telling her son that his father is moving out of the family home that day. She struggles to handle her partner leaving and being left as a working single parent. The actor needs to be able to play the complexities of the situation with integrity. Please note if the actor has personal experience of parental separation.
